Learn how to find information about foreign countries by searching the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) database.

One of the types of information you may be required to find for your courses is country information. There are many different resources that you can use to find information about foreign countries, but this video will highlight the country reports found in EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit).

You can access EIU Country Reports directly from the list of business databases under “EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit).” You can also access EIU Country Reports from the database ABI/INFORM Complete by clicking “Browse” underneath the database name.

Once we’re on the “Browse Featured Content” page, you can see that there is a variety of information you can access from this page, including Industry and Market Research, Commodity Reports, and Company Reports. You may want to keep this in mind for future assignments.

But for this video, we’re focusing on country information. In the “Country Reports” section, there are several documents that you can access.

Country Data focuses on national figures such as GDP, economic indicators, and forecasts and expenditures.

Country Finance & Forecast Reports include information on the political and business outlook, economic policy and forecast, market opportunities, demographic information and a fact sheet.

For additional information about business, economy, finance, politics, and regulations in a country, you may want to consider looking at one of the “ViewsWire” documents. Be aware of the publication date; some sector reports are up to ten years old.

The Oxford Analytica Country Profiles contain country reports which include information on economics, politics, international relations, government, geography, population, demographics, and other facts. You can Browse by Location here as well.

The Oxford Economics by Country Industry Forecast reports provides great detail on industry information within a country.

The Oxford Economics Country Economic Forecast reports do the same for economic data.

Let’s say we’re looking for information about Germany.

To get to the Country Data for Germany, simply click on the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Country Data link. I’ll expand the menu for Western Europe by clicking on the plus sign next to the link to get to the specific countries in that area. As you can see, there are many documents listed for some of the countries. I’ll click on the link to the documents next to Germany to access the information. The most recent report is listed at the top of the page so we’re going to choose that. It is available as a downloadable Spreadsheet.

Returning to the Browse page, I can access Country Finance & Forecast Reports by clicking on the link. You can see that the link defaults to the “Browse by Subject” feature, but I know I’m looking for information about Germany, so I’m going to switch to the “Browse by Location” feature by clicking on that tab. Again, I need to select the region, Western Europe, and then the country, Germany. Like the Country Reports, the Country Forecasts are also produced monthly. I’ll select the latest one to get to the Full Text of the document in HTML format. The other country reports listed here work in a similar manner.

Other library resources that have country information include country reports in the database Business Source Premier (Hint: Choose Country Report under Publication Type) as well as in the OECD (the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development) iLibrary database. If you have any questions about finding country information, or other types of information, please contact the Alvin Sherman Library.
