At a reception, Banana Wave founders H.E. Neter (“Nature”) Kush Ben Alkebulan and his fiancée, Trendolyn Hopkins shared their inspirational story of how determination, perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and the support of the NSU Alvin Sherman Library turned their dream into a successful company. “Nature” and Trendolyn dreamed of bringing his grandmother’s generational banana milk recipe to life. Armed with an entrepreneurial spirit, they dedicated themselves to making that dream a reality. Every day for two years, they planted themselves in a study room at the Sherman Library to search for answers. “What do we need to know to build a successful company?” From survey design, trade show information, market research, distribution lists, packaging information, demographics, business valuation, accounting and taxation, alternative medicine, supply and demand, law, economics, researching types of bananas to discovering buyer habits, and with the support of the Alvin Sherman librarians, a formidable business plan was built.

Today, Banana Wave (www.bananawave.com) is now being distributed through Whole Foods and Walmart.

The Dorm Doctor

Join the Circle of Friends and Carolyn S. George on April 27th, 2017, as she talks about her book, The Dorm Doctor, a handbook targeted to college students and their parents to help them prepare for the college experience and the many potential health related pitfalls that accompany the journey.

The Dorm Doctor is a health handbook intended for both parents and students.

  • How to maintain a healthy life in a college setting
  • Guidance on how to identify and manage common illnesses
  • Do’s and don’ts that all students should know to keep them healthy during the school year.
  • Answers for parents when they call home not feeling well

Carolyn S. George, MD, author of “The Dorm Doctor” and founder/owner of VIDA Integrative Medicine, is dedicated to providing personalized healthcare by identifying and addressing the root causes of illness through an approach called Functional and Integrative Medicine. Her functional medical approach helps her find answers so she can treat the root cause of disease instead of just treating the symptoms. She works closely with her patients to explore their health and identify areas of improvement with both traditional medicine as well as nutritional support to maximize their health and well being.

WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Did you know that according to the 2010 Census, approximately 22% of Broward County adults are functionally illiterate?  These individuals can’t read to their children, assist with homework, complete a job application or write a basic letter.

Every day, the NSU Alvin Sherman Library staff is working diligently with the community to help reduce the illiteracy rate in Broward County. Whether it’s through children’s story times, school outreaches, or workshops for NSU students, our librarians focus on building a love for reading and making a difference in their lives.

Your Circle of Friends membership is a VITAL part of our funding and helps us make our contributions to the library and other literacy-based community projects possible.

This past year, becoming a Circle of Friend member helped fund:

• The Circle of Friends state-of-the-art Collaborative Study Room where NSU and community students can engage in group study and project work.
SeussFest! This annual community event celebrates the works and contributions of Dr. Seuss through interactive programs and activities which encourages a love for reading. This year alone, the Library gave away over 2,500 books to children who attended this event.

Over the years, the Circle of Friends has also continued to help:

• Build one of the finest print, e-book and audiobook collections in the county
• Purchase academic databases for research available to NSU students and faculty, as well as all Broward residents, employees and students
• Update critical technology to help build a nucleus of information for NSU students and the public
• Refurbish a teen room that is now a hub to hang out in after school
• Provide new furniture for the very popular children’s area

That’s why, as President of the Circle of Friends, I am asking you to help us meet the needs of the NSU and the Broward county public by renewing your membership today!

If you have already renewed, thank you for your continued loyalty. Remember, your membership donation is fully tax-deductible as allowed by the law and valid through June 30th, 2017.

If you have any questions, please call: (954) 262-4627 or email: libdev@nova.edu

Sincerely,

Your partner in literacy,

Gift from Craig & Barbara Weiner Creates Holocaust Reflection and Resource Room in NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library

A gift from Craig and Barbara Weiner to Nova Southeastern University will result in the installation of a new Holocaust Reflection and Resource Room in the Alvin Sherman Library. The gift was presented by Craig Weiner, President of the Holocaust Learning and Education Fund, Inc. and his wife Barbara to NSU at the Alvin Sherman Library Circle of Friends Annual Gala on May 14.

The gift will fund, furnish, equip and build the new room, on the Alvin Sherman Library’s second floor. In addition, an endowed fund will be established to provide resource materials and for maintenance of the room as well as to support related special events.

“Due to the generosity of Craig and Barbara Weiner, the Alvin Sherman Library will be able to provide unique information resources for the university community including the residents of Broward County,” said Lydia Acosta, M.A., NSU vice president of information services and university librarian. “ This room will serve as an educational place of serious study and reflection on this period in history. “

Set to open in the coming academic year, the room will offer NSU students and the general public a place to learn about, and to contemplate the horrendous acts that result from intolerance and hate.
