Library Code of Conduct

Welcome to the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The library serves both Nova Southeastern University and Broward County. This joint-use facility may be the only library shared by a private university and the public. The synergies are quite obvious in the collections and services provided. Nova Southeastern University and Broward County realize, through collective efforts, collections, access to electronic resources, and information services they could not provide individually.

The goal of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center is to provide an atmosphere conducive to the enjoyment of facilities where people of all ages may read, study, use library and information technology equipment, and partake in Library or community activities and programs. The Code of Conduct indicates the standards of behavior expected of patrons in the library.

Rules and regulations are in place for the protection of the library’s resources, patrons, staff and building. The following rules and regulations, referred to as the library’s Code of Conduct, have been established for all of the library’s users. Anyone whose behavior is not in compliance with this Code of Conduct will be asked to leave the building. If a person defies an order personally communicated by an authorized library employee or a Public Safety Officer not to enter the library or not to remain in the library for failure to comply with the Code of Conduct, said person is subject to arrest for trespass (General Statutes of Florida 810.09). This Code of Conduct is posted in the library and on the library’s web site ( Copies of this Code of Conduct are available at all service desks.

The Code of Conduct is intended to encourage behavior that supports the library’s objective to provide the best possible resources in a warm, welcoming environment. Behavior becomes unacceptable when it interferes with this objective, impinges on its use or enjoyment by others, causes damage to buildings or equipment or causes injury to oneself or others. Those willing to modify unacceptable behavior are always welcome to stay. However, those unable to comply will be asked to leave and library privileges may be suspended.
