2016-17 Activities and Accomplishments

Circle of Friends kicked off the 2016-2017 fiscal year with a Mystery in the Library event which offered a lively evening of “whodunnit” investigative entertainment and dinner raising $6,000 in underwriting for a net profit of $5,209.44.

Giving Tuesday at the Library in November 2016 resulted in raising $425.

For the second consecutive year, Circle of Friends supported Seussfest, a signature annual event that brought nearly 6,000 people to the Library and addresses literacy issues facing our South Florida community by helping to foster a love of reading.

As a result of the strategic planning meeting held in the summer, we hosted a thank you reception for our Friends and a welcome for new members which was well attended.  The reception was followed by “On Hemingway: Three Views” funded by Florida Humanities Council. The performance by Betty Jean Steinshouer offered a portrayal of three “in character” views of Hemingway.

In April, Circle of Friends hosted Dr. Carolyn George, the author of The Dorm Doctor, a college handbook for health, for a presentation geared at students and their parents.

In May, Bonnie Lippman was inducted on to the Board at the Annual Meeting, with 41 attendees present.  Lydia M. Acosta, Elaine Blattner, Larry Maurer and Gilbert H. Young, M.D. were recognized for their service and Michael was recognized for having served one year as President.

Banana Wave gave a presentation on how they became a successful company thanks to the resources of the Alvin Sherman Library.

At the Annual Gala and Fundraiser, 56 attendees enjoyed dinner and music by Fun Pianos! by 176 Keys. Underwriting totaled $10,500 plus additional contributions of $708, for a net profit of $4,246.40.

This past year, Circle of Friends implemented two new membership categories: Young Professionals and Library Staff.  We have 139 Circle of Friends memberships, compared to 93 memberships at this time last year – a 49.46% increase. This increase is due to a new initiative of a reduced rate of $25 for library staff members. We have 24 Library staff members to date.
