Genealogy 101: Where Did They Live? Using Online Map Tools.
An introductory overview to the benefits of using maps as tools for learning more about locating where your ancestors lived in the United States. Participants will learn how to navigate the Alvin Sherman Library’s Digital Sanborn Maps collection from ProQuest, Google Earth and Google Maps. Sanborn fire insurance maps are the most frequently consulted maps in both public and academic libraries. Sanborn maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, environmentalists and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Google Earth and Google Maps are online map services that allows users to view basic or custom maps view street level images, and get driving directions. This program is part of a series on genealogy held in conjunction with the Alvin Sherman Library exhibit, Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience. Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience was developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The national tour of the exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.
