“The Musical Chicago and all that Genealogical Jazz”: A program sponsored by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Broward County
In this talk Ron Arons will piece together the life of the real life Chicago murderess Belva Gaertner, who was the role model for the character in the Broadway musical and Hollywood film Chicago. And, oh, what a life she led! Learn what happened in her life before and after 1924, the year she was jailed for murdering her lover outside her marriage.
Ron Arons is an author and genealogist who has traced his roots to England, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. In 2008, Ron appeared on the PBS television series, The Jewish Americans, as the acknowledged expert on Jewish criminals of New York’s Lower East Side. His book, The Jews of Sing Sing has received international acclaim. Ron has presented at the JGSBC in the recent past – in 2006 he presented a fascinating look on the lives of Meyer Lansky & Bugsy Siegel and in 2010 he spoke on “Mapping Madness – Jewish Genealogy and the Internet”.
