GSBC: Fort Lauderdale, The Last Frontier in America

The Genealogical Society of Broward County's monthly meeting will feature Valerie Kooyker, docent and speaker at the Fort Lauderdale History Center. Her talk will look at the history of Fort Lauderdale.

The Fort Lauderdale area has been called 'the last frontier in America', due to the fact that the last permanent settlement was made there only a little over a hundred years ago! Because its history is so recent, it is unique in that one can almost reach out and touch the early pioneers such as Edwin King and Frank and Ivy Stranahan. These were truly remarkable and brave people who took on the incredible challenge of settling a formerly uninhabitable wilderness, laying the groundwork through their perserverance and many accomplishments for what Fort Lauderdale is today.

The program will begin at 2:30 pm after the GSBC open lab (12, noon - 2 p.m.) and the Genealogical Society of Broward County business meeting (which begins at 2 p.m.).

Sponsored by the Genealogical Society of Broward County.
